What is a QR code?

QR codes are like Barcodes, with the difference that any smart phone and some camera phones can read them. They bridge the gap between the real and the digital world allowing consumers to interact and engage with your product, brand or message on a more personal level on the most ubiquitous device to date.

On June 15, 2011, Lynda Steele and her team from CTV came by the office to interview our President Michael Grant to talk about QR codes. He made the excellent point that QR codes are a terrific tool for 1on1 marketing, as they don’t inundate the customers with advertising, but rather provide the choice to engage. Our animation What’s in a QR code, developed by our multimedia team under the direction of Delma Baluyot was shown in full length. The show was aired on Monday, July 18 as part of the 6PM news. There are limitless opportunities when it comes to implementing a QR code into your marketing campaigns. They have become a powerful force in the marketing world, as they are offering a quick and easy link between the customer and your brand.

How to install a QR code scanner on your smart phone

iPhone

1. Open the “App Store” application.
2. Search for “Barcodes” at the bottom of the screen.
3. Locate the “Barcodes” application.
4. Touch the “Free” icon at the top of the screen. It will change to an “Install” icon.
5. Touch the “Install” icon that just appeared.
6. Enter your iTunes password when prompted.
Other scanner apps: NeoReader, Optiscan

Android

  1. Open the “Market” application from the home screen.
  2. Search for ‘zxing’
  3. Click on “Barcode Scanner”
  4. Click on ‘Install’
  5. You will be prompted that the device requires elevated access to your device. Press OK to confirm
  6. Once the application is downloaded and installed, launch the QR code scanner by selecting Barcode Scanner from the Android home screen.
